The Society was formed in 1982 under the name "Woolmer Forest Archaeological and Historical Society" by a small group of enthusiasts who shared interests in history and archaeology. Many were particularly concerned with learning more about the local events which shaped the area from the earliest times.
From the outset it was decided to define the `local' area as that part of Hampshire within an approximate five mile radius of Whitehill-Bordon, extending to Liss in the south, Holt Pound on the Hampshire/Surrey border to the north, Liphook eastward, and the Worldhams westward. All are within or near the Alice Holt and Woolmer Forests.
Naturally, members come from these places, hailing from Headley, Whitehill and Bordon, Greatham , Selborne, Kingsley and Binsted to mention a few.
Meetings are held at the Forest Community Centre Bordon at 7.30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month (except for the months of June, July and August) when usually an illustrated talk is given by a guest speaker. Such talks have been concerned not only with local aspects of history and archaeology, but with excavation techniques, current and past excavations, myths and legends, pottery, glassware, artefacts, abbeys and churches, architecture, weaponry, various ancient sites, and a host of other subjects. The talks are free to members, whilst we make a nominal charge to non-members, who are always very welcome.
The Treasurer will be pleased to accept applications for membership at any of the meetings.
Usually in May, June or July visits are organised to places of special interest. Often special arrangements are made for the provision of a guide and 'behind the scenes' looks not normally available to members of the public.
Members sometimes have the opportunity of assisting at archaeological excavations, and these have been at Neatham, Holt Pound, Farnham, Alton and Warnborough with other Societies, and excavations conducted by this Society at Whitehill. Other field activities such as field walking and surveys are undertaken as the occasion demands.
If you have an interest in history or archaeology perhaps our Society will provide you with the opportunity you seek of expanding your knowledge, and of meeting others with similar interests. You can be assured of a welcome at any of our meetings.
